Middle School race dates 2017-18:
Monday the 5th we will be training Slalom.
Tuesday the 6th we have a meet scheduled at Nubs Nob with Petoskey and Charlevoix. This will be a slalom format starting at 4:00 with Harbor Springs hosting. The athletes will be dismissed from school at 2:20 for a 2:30 bus to Nubs Nob.
Wednesday the 7th we will go back to GS training on the Race Arena.
Thursday the 8th we will be traveling to Boyne Mountain for a GS Race with Boyne City, Charlevoix, Grayling, TCE, TCW and SEAS. We will arrange to get the athletes out of school at 2:00 for a 2:10 bus departure, racing begins at 4:00. We will have pizza after racing in the cafeteria and the bus will bring us back to the Middle School. We usually get back to the school around 6:30. More details on the away race to follow.
Monday the 12th we will train slalom.
Tuesday the 13th is our final race “The Little Brown Jug”. This is the battle of the Bay against Petoskey and is a dual event format. The athletes will be racing two runs of slalom on the Race Arena, and two runs of GS on Birch Run. The athletes will be dismissed from school at 1:30 with the race beginning at 3:00. Girls will start in slalom, boys in GS. There will be time in between disciplines for the athletes to change gear and slip and inspect courses.
After the race there will be awards, cake and refreshments in the cafeteria. There will be trophies awarded to the top 3 in each discipline and medals awarded from 4th to 10th place in each discipline. The little Brown Jug will be awarded to the winning 7th and 8th grade teams (one for boys and one for girls), and the Little Brown Mugs will be awarded to the winning 6th grade teams.
This race is being co-hosted by Harbor Springs and Petoskey, so if you want to help out please sign up to volunteer. For spectators, you can easily see both courses from the finish coral at bottom of the hills.
Ski Team Banquet was originally on the calendar for Monday the 19th. I know there are a few athletes who train with JART on Monday nights and I don’t want this to be a conflict. Tom T. and Tom G. are also racing on Monday nights. I would like to move the banquet date to Tuesday the 20th. We have been doing this in the MS cafeteria from 5:30 to 7:00 pm. We would bring in pizza and assign families to bring salad, desert, drinks, etc. I hope this new date works with everyone.
All for now. As always, please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

Results January 9:
The HS 7th and 8th grade girls finished in 2nd place with 37 points, Petoskey was 1st with 15 points and GTSC was 3rd with 71 points. For the Lady Rams it was Katelyn Drayer leading the charge with a 2nd place overall finish and a combined time of 53.13. Isabella Balistreri finished 4th overall with a time of 54.30, Kyra Shouldice was 9th with a time of 56.22 and Kaia Thompson rounded out our top 4 with a 22nd place finish and a combined time of 1:10.84.
We only had two 6th grade girls competing, so not enough to field a team result. Individually it was Sydney Hoffman with a 5th place overall finish and a combined time of 55.44 and Maddy Peters with a 15th place finish and a time of 1:06.65.
The boys 7th and 8th grade competition was won by Petoskey with a low point score of 23. GTSC was 2nd with 28 points and HS finished right behind in 3rd with 29 points. For the Rams it was Cal Benjamin coming out on top with a 5th place overall finish and a combined time of 49.40. Lance Smar finished in 7th with a time of 50.03, Bode Blancato was 8th with a time of 50.15, and Connor Truman rounded out our top four with a 9th place finish and a time of 50.45.
Our 6th grade boys were also short on numbers to be able to get a team score. Individually it was Jackson Deegan on top with a 3rd place overall finish and a combined time of 53.42. Niko Rekevics finished 6th overall with a time of 59.74.
The race went smoothly and a big thanks to all the parent volunteers. Complete results are attached for your review and available at www.live-timing.com.
Our next race is Tuesday January 16th at Nubs Nob at 4:00 pm. It will be a GS race with Petoskey, Boyne City, Grayling, and Charlevoix. Today we plan to train slalom on the Race Arena, Monday we will go back to GS training.
As a reminder, Nubs Nob closes to the public at 4:30 on Tuesdays. After that we are there as guests and we need to respect the rules. After 4:30 the only hills that we are allowed to be on are Birch Run (race hill) and Smooth Sailing (hill just to the skiers left of Birch Run). All other hills are off limits, especially the terrain park. I had one of the Nubs employees tell me that he had to chase a few HS team member out of the terrain park after 4:30. We will be doing some extra skating and exercises today on behalf of those skiers.
Another reminder, we always meet as a team and we are dismissed as a team. Yesterday HS hosted the meet and we were responsible to set the courses and tear down the courses. The “team” was supposed to be at the top of the race hill at the end of the race to help pull the course and slip, this did not happen and I’m afraid we lost more than half the team to the locker room prior to being dismissed. Again, you know who you are and we will be doing some additional skating today on your behalf. Whether we are training or racing, the last thing we do is meet as a team and we are dismissed as a team. If you have to leave early, you need to let one of the Coaches know and get their permission first.
All for now…
